A closet (especially in North American usage) is a small and enclosed space, a cabinet, or a cupboard in a house or building used for general storage or hanging clothes. A closet for food storage is usually referred to as a pantry. A closet, through French from Latin clausum, "closed" began life in the seventeenth century as a small private room, often behind a bedroom, to which a man or woman could retire, for privacy, reading, or enjoyment of personal works of art for this usage, see Cabinet (architecture). Modern closets can be built into the walls of the house during construction so that they take up no apparent space in the bedroom, or they can be a large, free-standing piece of furniture designed for clothes storage, in which case they are often called a wardrobe or armoire. Closets are often built under stairs, thereby using awkward space that would otherwise go unused. In current British usage, a "wardrobe" can also be built-in, and the word "cupboard" can be used to refer to a closet. In Elizabethan and Middle English, closet referred to a larger room in which a person could sit and read in private, but now refers to a small room in general[1]. In Indian usage, a closet often refers to a toilet. This probably originated from the word 'water closet', which means a flush toilet. In North America, chests, trunks and wall-mounted pegs typically provided storage prior to World War II. Built-in wall closets were uncommon and where they did exist, they tended to be small and shallow. Following World War II, however, deeper, more generously sized closets were introduced to new housing designs, which proved to be very attractive to buyers. It has even been suggested that the closet was a major factor in peoples' migration to the suburbs. |

It stands to reason that you more space you have, you more organized you will be. Why then, are so many walk-in closets disorganized messes? It seems that the more space we have, the more junk we have to fill it. Walk-in closets offer a variety of design options. They can be filled with shelves for folded clothing or books. They can host tie racks, belt racks, and shoe cubbies. They can hold multiple garment racks for hanging clothes. Hooks and hang bars can also be installed to hold hats, robes, and other such items. Drawers or dressers can be placed inside walk-in closets to free up space inside the room. Walk-in closets grant you the freedom to be creative. For example, islands and benches can be placed inside large closets to create the feeling of a dressing room. Walk-in closet organizers can be purchased as kits from local home improvement stores and some department stores. These kits contain everything needed to design your basic closet—components, shelving, and hardware. Accessories are available separately. You may have to purchase more than one kit to accommodate the entire closet. Though assembly is necessary, it is usually relatively simple. Closet organizer systems can also be purchased for walk-in closets. These systems usually consist of pre-assembled pieces that simply need to be installed. |

Where it all began! Introducing the man that started it all. In 1978, at the age of 17, Neil Balter founded California Closets, which grew from his dad's garage into the world's largest custom closet company. In just under a decade, Balter expanded the company to include over 100 franchises in the United States, Canada, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and Spain with annual sales in excess of $66 million. In 1990, just before his 30th birthday, Balter negotiated the multi-million dollar sale of the company to Williams-Sonoma, Inc.
After enjoying success at such a young age, Neil moved on to another business opportunity expecting the same results. In 1995, Neil started Organizers DirectTM in Phoenix, Arizona, to capture the market between high end and do-it-yourselfers. Today Organizers DirectTM has over 500 dealers in the U.S. through its marketing and sales partnership with ClosetMaid. Neil has been exclusive consultant to ClosetMaid for nine years, helping with the development with it's higher-end MasterSuite line with a specific emphasis on it's dealer program.

Avoid digging through your cluttered closets for hours on end to try and find something that might be somewhere else to begin with. Install closet organizers to get things in your closets sorted out so that storing and retrieving would be less like a trip to the mines. Pre-made closet organizers are widely available at your local store or even right here on the internet. Everyone has this problem of keeping their closets organized, whether they admit to it or not. No matter how a big a closet you have, it always seems to be too full of stuff. Closet organizers will help sort out the storage space in a closet. A couple of shelving units will organize stacks of clothes more efficiently. A nifty shoe holder hung on the inside of a closet door gives access to otherwise wasted space. Multi-height closet bars allow clothes to be hung from different heights to optimize space. Shelving units are one of the most useful items from the large range of closet organizers. Almost any home will almost certainly have a dedicated “junk” closet, whether it was planned to have one or otherwise. |
